Ledger.com/start: | Here Your Secure Journey Begins
Welcome to Ledger. This guide is your companion for safely starting with a Ledger hardware wallet — from unboxing and installing Ledger Live, to creating secure backups, installing coin apps, and adopting long-term protection strategies for your crypto holdings.
Why start with Ledger?
Ledger devices put private keys inside tamper-resistant hardware, separating signing operations from internet-connected environments. For anyone who wants true self-custody — whether you’re learning or managing significant holdings — a Ledger device reduces exposure to malware, phishing, and server-side breaches by ensuring you physically authorize every transaction.
What you’ll find in this guide
This page walks you through the recommended first steps: verify your device, install Ledger Live, initialize or restore a wallet, secure your recovery phrase, install necessary apps, and perform test transactions. It also covers best practices, troubleshooting, and how to get help if you need it.
Unboxing & verification
- Inspect the packaging for tamper evidence. If the seal appears broken or suspicious, pause and contact official Ledger support.
- Confirm the model and serial number—keep the box until you complete setup and verification.
- Only buy from Ledger’s official store or authorized resellers to limit tampering risk.
Install Ledger Live
Ledger Live is the official desktop and mobile app used to initialize devices, install coin apps, manage accounts, update firmware, and view your portfolio. Always download Ledger Live from ledger.com/start and verify the download when checksums or signatures are provided.
Desktop vs Mobile
Use the desktop app for firmware updates and heavy management tasks; use the mobile app for convenient on-the-go access and portfolio checks.
Verify installer
When available, verify the installer checksum. This ensures the file hasn’t been tampered with by third parties.
Initialize your device
- Connect the Ledger device to your computer and open Ledger Live.
- Choose "Set up as new device" to create a fresh wallet or "Restore" if you already have a recovery phrase.
- Set a PIN on the device — pick something memorable but not trivial. The PIN defends against casual physical access.
Important: Ledger Live will never ask for your recovery phrase. Only enter the phrase on the device when performing a legitimate restore.
Create and protect your recovery phrase
During setup the device generates a recovery phrase (usually 24 words). This phrase is the master key to your funds and must be protected carefully:
- Write it on the provided recovery sheet, then copy it to a secondary secure medium such as a metal plate for durability.
- Store copies in separate secure locations (e.g., home safe, safety deposit box) to avoid loss from a single event.
- Do not store backups digitally (photos, cloud notes, text files) — those can be compromised by malware or breaches.
Install coin apps & add accounts
Ledger devices use per-coin apps that you install through Ledger Live’s Manager. Install only the apps you need. After installing, add accounts to Ledger Live to view balances and transaction history. Each account derives addresses from your recovery phrase — removing an app does not lose funds as long as you keep your recovery phrase safe.
Send and receive: test transaction
- Receive: choose an account in Ledger Live and use the "Receive" button to display an address. Always verify the address shown in Ledger Live matches the address displayed on your Ledger device.
- Send: create a small test transaction to another wallet. Confirm the destination, amount, and fee on the device screen before approving the signature.
Testing helps confirm your setup and minimizes risk before migrating larger balances.
Best practices & ongoing security
- Keep firmware and Ledger Live up to date; apply updates only through official channels.
- Never disclose your recovery phrase or PIN to anyone; Ledger support will never ask for them.
- Consider using passphrase-protected hidden wallets for sensitive holdings; remember a lost passphrase cannot be recovered.
- For large holdings, explore multisig or institutional custody options to reduce single-point risk.
Troubleshooting & support
Common issues include device not recognized, missing accounts, or firmware update problems. Try different USB cables/ports, ensure Ledger Live is updated, and consult the official help center if issues persist. If you suspect tampering, discontinue use and contact Ledger support for verification steps.
Where to go next
After setup and testing, plan your custody strategy: decide which assets to keep on-chain vs in cold storage, whether to split holdings across devices, and whether to adopt advanced features like passphrases or multisig. Subscribe to Ledger’s official channels for firmware advisories and security updates.
